HAVE YOUR SAY: Global Football Fan Survey Now Live

The Football Supporters Association Australia (FSAA), in strategic collaboration with researchers from Curtin University and PUC-Rio (Brazil), has officially launched a major global study into the behaviours of Australian football fans.

The survey is now open and available to all members of the Australian football community.

This significant international initiative investigates the unique consumption behaviours of supporters of Women’s National Teams (The Matildas) alongside comparative data from Men’s National Teams (The Socceroos), in addition to examining trends in support for club and local football.

With data collection already completed in Brazil, this current phase focuses on Australia before expanding to North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. This places Australian fans at the forefront of a truly global dataset.

From Anecdote to Evidence

Football Supporters Association Australia Deputy Chair, Blayne Treadgold, said the survey is a critical tool for moving fan advocacy from opinion to evidence-based strategy.

"We are delighted to launch this survey today, facilitated by experienced international academics," he said.

"For too long, assumptions have been made about what Australian fans want and how they behave. This study gives us the independent, academic data we need to prove the value and unique habits of our supporter base.

"Whether you follow the Matildas, the Socceroos, the A-Leagues, or your local NPL club, your input will directly inform how we advocate for better fan experiences.

"We encourage the entire Australian football community to take 10 minutes to participate and have their say."

Strategic Value

The goal of the study is to identify similarities and differences in how fans engage with the sport across gender lines and national borders.

The findings will be used to inform fan-centric management strategies in Australian football, providing the FSAA with the "hard data" required to represent the interests of supporters in boardrooms across the country.

Academic Credibility

The study is led by Ana Costa, a PhD candidate supervised by Dr. Clarice Kogut (PUC-Rio), a distinguished scholar in sports strategy.

The project holds ethical approval from the Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC 2025-0482).

Facilitating the Australian leg of the research is Dr. Luisa Campos, a Lecturer and Researcher in the School of Management and Marketing at Curtin University in Western Australia.

How to Participate

The survey is anonymous, voluntary, and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
