FSAA Statement regarding the Sydney Derby
The Football Supporters Association Australia (FSAA) acknowledges the anger, frustration, and deep concern felt across the supporter community following the statement released by The Cove regarding policing operations at the recent Sydney Derby.
The accounts detailed by The Cove represent a complete breakdown in matchday protocols and standards.
Supporter marshals and club liaison channels exist precisely to de-escalate tension before it manifests as conflict. Overriding these established systems does not protect public safety; it actively fuels hostility and manufactures the very conflict authorities claim to prevent.
Australian football continues to face a systemic double standard when it comes to policing. Matches are routinely subjected to a militarised, high-density police presence that is completely detached from statistical reality.
While other sporting codes record significantly higher rates of alcohol-fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour, it is clear that football supporters continue to be policed under a completely different set of rules and frameworks.
The FSAA is committed to establishing proactive policies alongside our members, supporter groups, and game stakeholders to ensure active culture is protected and agreed standards upheld.
